Bakili Muluzi, former Malawi President and national chairman of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has come out publicly to accept defeat in Tuesday’s general elections.
Muluzi’s party was in an electoral partnership with Malawi Congress Party (MCP), whose leader John Tembo is coming second in the race which incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika is so far winning with over 1 million votes as his main contender has 0.5 million votes.
The ex- state leader has therefore congratulated Mutharika for winning the elections that will see him ruling Malawi for another five years after ascending to the position of President in 2004.
"The United Democratic Front and its chairman would like to congratulate President Mutharika for winning the elections and we wish him well in the running of the country," says the UDF in a statement.
However, Muluzi’s ally in the elections Tembo on Wednesday indicated his party would not accept results of the polls alleging Mutharika and the DPP were rigging the ballots in some stations, especially the central region, MCP’s stronghold where the state President is also scooping a good number of votes.
Official results show that Mutharika’s DPP is also winning more seats in Parliament.
