Sitting President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) torch bearer Bingu wa Mutharika is still dominating the presidential race as the Electoral Commission (EC) continues counting ballots for the country’s general elections conducted on Tuesday.
According to the latest results, the EC tally shows that Mutharika dominating in all the three regions of the Malawi, namely south, center and north.
However his main contender, opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP)-United Democratic Front (UDF) coalition presidential representative has so far scooped more votes in the central districts of Salima and [home area] Dedza.
On the other hand, as they say home is best, the incumbent state President is also dominating in his home district of Thyolo, south Malawi.
Overall, as of 15:00 hours, Mutharika had amassed a total number of 15,946 votes in the southern region, against Tembo’s 2,683 votes. So far, 52 polling stations out of 1,462 were confirmed, representing a 1.85 percent of total ballots casted.
In the central, the DPP leader, who is poised to govern Malawi in the next five years, had 9,170 votes against the MCP/UDF alliance hopeful’s 6,466. Out of the 1,619 stations, 22 were counted, representing a 1.36 percent.
Mutharika is also overwhelmingly leading in the north with 4,071 votes counted, against Tembo’s 101. Thus far, 0.49 percent of the votes casted have been counted, that is in 4 of the 816 polling stations in the region.
