Presidential candidate for the Republican Party (RP) Stanley Masauli has announced that his party has accepted defeat in this year’s presidential race conducted yesterday when Malawians went to polls to elect a new President and Parliament for the next five years.
In a letter the party has written addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Anastasia Msosa, the party says they have seen that their party does not stand a chance of winning, thus admitting their failure to succeed in the presidential race which is highly contested by DPP’s Bingu wa Mutharika and his opponent John Tembo of the MCP/UDF coalition.
"It is very clear that Bingu wa Mutharika of the DPP is winning the election and we wish to congratulate him for the success. May Malawians give support to the DPP government in the next five years," says Masauli in the letter.
In a related development, independent presidential candidate James Mbowe Nyondo has also conceded defeat in the election upon getting news on how he is fairing as per results from various tally centers in districts across the country.
This is one of the indications that Malawi has had a peaceful and democratic election and the development is giving hope to Malawians that the country will not experience post election violence.
There were seven candidates vying for the country’s hottest seat.
The EC started announcing the electoral results around 3:00 hours of Wednesday with the second update at around 10:30 hours. According to the commission, the next update is expected at 15:00 hours.
