As the voting exercise in the 2009 Malawi presidential and parliamentary polls officially closed at 6pm this evening, the Electoral Commission (EC) has commended Malawians for a violence-free election.
According to a press statement issued by the commission and signed by its chairperson Justice Anastasia Msosa, "the commission is pleased to inform the public that the voting was conducted in an orderly manner without incidents of violence."
In the statement, Justice Msosa however pointed out slight problems that were encountered during the voting period including cases of missing names for registered voters on the voters roll.
She nevertheless disclosed that such voters were still allowed to cast their ballots upon showing their registration certificates falling within the number that was assigned to that particular station.
Meanwhile, the commission says voters who were still on the queue at the time of closing would be allowed to choose their presidential and parliamentary candidates of their choice.
