Voting in Malawi polls closed

The country’s electoral regulatory body Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced the closure of the voting exercise which has been taking place across the nation.

Nearly 6 million Malawians today went to various polling stations to cast their ballots to select the country’s leader expected to run the country as well as parliamentarians to represent them in the National Assembly within the next five years.

There were 7 presidential candidates competing for the seat, among them hottest contenders incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP)-United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance representative John Tembo.

More than one thousand party and independent candidates were fighting for only 193 seats in the south-east African developing state Parliament.
