A third generation of his family living in Malawi, 42-year-old Yunus Ishmael Lambat is the director of Lambats Variety Centre.
Since the mid 1980’s Lambat has contributed a lot to the security of Blantyre. When there was an increase in crime rate in the city, interested people in security formed the ‘’neighborhood watch’’ and he has been a member since its formation.
When community policing came into existence in Blantyre, in 1998, with the whole purpose of engaging the public in assisting the police in combating crime and work in partnership with the public for a safer Malawi, he was elected as secretary at station level in the city.
In 2001, members made him chairperson and under his leadership, the neighborhood watch has acquired a vehicle which is providing its services to the public 24 hours a day with the assistance of Blantyre police.
Lambat was elected as station executive chairman of Blantyre in 2002 before his re-election in 2006. During his terms of office, he has secured 2 mobile police units placed in the commercial city.
He represents the business community of all races on security and social issues and early this year he was elected as southern region community policing executive chairperson.
Lambat believes security plays a vital role in the development and growth of Malawi, which brings confidence to investors entering the country. It creates jobs, and this in turn reduces unemployment.
