Aleke Kadonaphani Banda (AKB) was voted as 2008 Diversity Leader 'Lifetime Achiever'. Incmedia, organisers of the revolutionary annual event honored the veteran politician for his contribution to Malawi's socio-economic, political and diverse sectors.

Born 69 years ago in Zambia, Aleke Kadonaphani Banda (AKB) demonstrated his leadership proficiency at the age of 14 when he was elected District Secretary for Nyasaland African Congress (NAC), prior to his appointment as General Secretary for Southern Rhodesia African Students Association 4 years later.

During the State of Emergency in 1959, he was arrested and detained at Khami Prison in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia before he was eventually deported to Nyasaland, where he was very instrumental in the formation of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Between 1960 and 1980, AKB served as MCP Secretary General, Personal Political Secretary to Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, and Cabinet Minister in several Ministries, besides holding other key positions in both statutory and private corporations.

As a founding member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1992, he was elected First Vice President a year later. He served as Minister of Finance, Minister of Economic Development and Planning; Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Health.

Between 1996 and 2003, he was First Initial Trustee of Press Trust and its Chairman.  AKB resigned from his position as First Vice President and as a member of the UDF and was elected President of the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) in 2004.

At this time, he is an MP for Nkhata Bay South Constituency; a Member of the Business Committee; Deputy Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and a Member of the Health Committee of the Malawi Parliament.
