Maldeco Aquaculture was established in 2003 after it was discovered the stock of fish was declining. The company started digging ponds, collecting brood stock from the lake in 2004 and effective breeding commencing only in 2005.
The company now has over 30,000 species of brood stock in 42 ponds.
Maldeco Aquaculture which is a member of Commercial Aquaculture, Producers of Africa boosts that it is the only company that has a fish feed mill.
The company which started with unskilled labour force has to date trained biologists , Aquaculture graduates, engineers and Accountants.
Some of the challenges included the need of high capital until when Malawi’s largest conglomerate, Press Corporation came to their rescue, pumping in enough money for capital.
Another challenge is lifting Chambo from 35 metres to the surface as it disturbs the swim bladder and this kills the fish.
Exorbitant taxes also affect the operations adversely.
The company’s success includes having the capacity to sell fingerlings. The company hopes to sell a lot of these to interested organizations.
